The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) under the leadership of Managing Director Umar Farouk is making significant strides in addressing long standing infrastructure deficiencies and manpower shortages within the country’s aviation sector.
Addressing the issue of communication, Farouk stated the past challenges where airlines avoided Nigerian airspace due to difficulties in communicating with air traffic controllers.
To remedy this, the agency has undergone a comprehensive redesign of its communication structure, ensuring seamless coverage across the nation’s airspace. This includes increased station deployment and the implementation of backup systems to mitigate any potential failures.
The issue of unreliable electricity supply has been tackled through the deployment of solar energy to critical facilities, alongside reliance on the national grid, generators, and plants. While funding remains a challenge, efforts are underway to access the allocated budget of N40 billion for infrastructure improvements.
One of the pressing challenges highlighted by Farouk is the shortage of air traffic controllers. This shortfall is attributed to past administrations’ lack of proper manpower auditing and planning. The process of recruiting and training new controllers is time-intensive, with Farouk emphasizing the need for a systematic approach to address this critical manpower gap.
Additionally, NAMA is gearing up to review navigation charges, which have remained unchanged since 2008 despite significant increases in airfare. Farouk stresses the agency’s commitment to ensuring safety without compromising on cost recovery, urging airlines to accept the necessity of adjusting navigational charges to match current economic realities.
In addressing concerns about political interference, Farouk stated that the current administration has fostered an environment where professionals are allowed to carry out their duties without undue influence. He commends the Minister for his hands-off approach, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring professionalism within the industry.
