Flamingos Secure Spot in Final U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifying Round with Dominant Win
The Nigeria U-17 Women’s team, the Flamingos, reached the final qualifying round for the Women’s U-17 World Cup after a resounding 6-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Abuja this evening.
This result came after the Flamingos were held to a 1-1 draw by Burkina Faso in the first leg in Mali last week.
Chidi Harmony, who scored Nigeria’s lone goal in the first leg, opened the scoring in Abuja. Mary Effiong then doubled the lead, followed by Harmony’s second goal of the match. Layi Kareem added a fourth with a sublime finish, and Harmony completed her hat-trick with a wonderful and exquisite strike. Effiong wrapped up the scoring late in the game.
Three teams will represent Africa at this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, scheduled to run from 16 October to 3 November, 2024. The Flamingos will now face the winner of the Senegal vs. Liberia fixture in the final qualifying round. Senegal leads 3-1 heading into the second leg in Monrovia this weekend.
At the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India, the Flamingos finished third, showcasing their potential and setting high expectations for this year’s tournament.
