Nigeria To Host Historic International Air Show In Abuja.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to host the nation’s inaugural International Air Show in Abuja in December 2025, marking a significant milestone for the country’s aviation sector. The event, set to showcase Nigeria’s growing potential as a hub for aviation in Africa, is expected to draw global stakeholders, including manufacturers, investors, regulators, and aviation enthusiasts.
Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, revealed the plans during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Interior. He highlighted that Abuja was chosen as the host city over Lagos and Uyo due to its strategic location and accessibility. The decision followed thorough internal deliberations, with the capital’s infrastructure deemed ideal for accommodating international participants and exhibitors.

The air show is poised to be a world-class event, featuring live aircraft displays, solo and formation aerobatics, and dynamic demonstrations of advanced aviation technology. It will also include business-to-business matchmaking sessions, panel discussions, and an industry awards ceremony, fostering collaboration and innovation within the sector. The Federal Government aims to leverage the event to promote Nigeria’s aviation capabilities and attract foreign investment, aligning with broader economic goals.
Collaboration will be key to the event’s success, with the Ministry of Aviation partnering closely with the Ministry of Interior to ensure seamless operations. Agencies such as the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Federal Road Safety Corps will play vital roles in visa facilitation, civilian security, and traffic management. The Nigerian Air Force, represented by Air Vice Marshal Tajudeen Oladele Yusuf, has also pledged full support, with a technical subcommittee already in place to aid planning.
Dr. Magdalena Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, welcomed the initiative and assured comprehensive support from her ministry. She emphasised the need for a structured operational framework to define the roles of each agency, particularly in managing the influx of international visitors. Kemi Nandap, Comptroller General of Immigration, underscored the importance of data-sharing to streamline visa processes, ensuring a smooth experience for attendees.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), represented by Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards Godwin Balang, has committed to providing regulatory oversight and necessary authorisations to ensure the event meets global standards. The air show is expected to feature participation from civil aviation authorities worldwide, with invitations extended to showcase Nigeria’s advancements on a global stage.
There is some uncertainty regarding the exact dates and location, as earlier reports suggested the event might take place in Lagos in the first quarter of 2025. However, recent statements confirm Abuja as the host city, with the event scheduled for 2–4 December 2025, as announced by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. Keyamo also clarified that the event will be fully funded by private investors, with no public funds involved, though the government will provide essential infrastructure such as runways.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to attend the event, further elevating its profile. The air show aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), aiming to foster intra-African trade and connectivity. By hosting this landmark event, Nigeria seeks to position itself as a leading player in the global aviation industry, showcasing its potential to drive economic growth and innovation across the continent.
