NFF Officially Unveils Newly Appointed Super Eagles Head Coach Éric Chelle.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officially introduced Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. In an event at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in the early hours of today. The unveiling marks a significant development in Nigerian football, heralding a new era for one of Africa’s most celebrated national teams.
Chelle, a 47-year-old Franco-Malian, was appointed following a thorough recommendation by the NFF’s Technical and Development Committee, which was then ratified by the federation’s Executive Committee. His unveiling took place at 11 AM in the media conference room, surrounded by football enthusiasts and media personnel eager to witness the dawn of this new chapter.
The former Mali coach brings a wealth of experience to the Super Eagles, having previously managed the Malian national team to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His tactical acumen and leadership were particularly highlighted during his tenure, where his teams were known for an aggressive, attacking style of play.
NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressed confidence in Chelle’s capabilities, stating, “He embodies the fresh energy, new thinking, and positive attitude we desire for the Super Eagles as they tackle the remaining six matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.” Gusau also appealed to Nigerians for their support, acknowledging the passionate reactions from fans but stressing the importance of unity and backing for the new coach.
Chelle is set to lead the team in crucial upcoming matches, starting with the World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March. Moreover, he will also take charge of the Super Eagles B team at the forthcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) next month.
The event was not just about welcoming Chelle but also about announcing his coaching staff, who will collaborate with him to elevate both the senior and B teams. Their collective mission is clear: to qualify Nigeria for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and to excel in continental competitions.
The appointment has sparked a mix of reactions among fans and former players, with some expressing optimism about Chelle’s track record and others voicing concerns over the choice of a non-Nigerian coach and his overall profile. However, the NFF has assured full support for Chelle, aiming to leverage his strategy to bring success and glory back to Nigerian football.
