NFF Appoints Éric Sékou Chelle As New Super Eagles Head Coach.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially announced the appointment of Éric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach for Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team, the Super Eagles. The decision was ratified by the NFF’s Executive Committee on Tuesday following a recommendation from the Technical and Development Sub-Committee.
The appointment was discussed and agreed upon during a meeting in Abuja on Thursday, 2nd January 2025. Chelle, a former player and coach of Mali’s national team, the Aiglons, brings a wealth of experience to the Nigerian squad. His tenure with Mali since 2022 was marked by a notable performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where his team narrowly missed reaching the semi-finals, losing in extra time to the host nation, who ultimately clinched the title.
Chelle, aged 47, has a distinguished footballing background, having earned five international caps for Mali. His coaching journey has seen him at the helm of several clubs including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran. During his playing days, he represented French clubs like Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais.
His immediate task will be to steer the Super Eagles towards securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with crucial matches scheduled for March in the fifth and sixth matchdays of the qualifiers.
The NFF expressed optimism about the new appointment, with the Executive Committee unanimously backing Chelle’s credentials and vision for the team. “We believe that Mr. Chelle’s experience and strategic insight will be instrumental in achieving our objectives for the international stage,” stated a spokesperson for the NFF.
Chelle’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Nigerian football, as the nation looks to reassert its prominence in African and world football. His role will be crucial not only in managing the team but also in nurturing young talents and implementing a playing style that aligns with Nigeria’s rich football legacy.
As Chelle takes up his position, the Nigerian football community and fans across the globe are eager to see how his leadership will influence the Super Eagles’ performance in upcoming international engagements.
