New Process for Carabao Cup Third Round Draw Announced.
Update on details of the new format for the Carabao Cup third round draw has been revealed and it’s set to take place on Wednesday night, 28 August 2024. This season, the draw will introduce a slight alteration to accommodate the expanded European fixtures as disclosed on (arsenal.com).
With the Champions League and Europa League now featuring additional matchweeks, these new dates coincide with the Carabao Cup third round, scheduled for the weeks commencing 16th and 23rd September. To avoid any fixture clashes for teams participating in European competitions, the draw will be conducted using two separate bowls.
Draw Process:
Bowl One: This will include the six clubs competing in the Champions League and Europa League, namely Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham. These teams will be pre-drawn to determine whether they will play at home or away in the third round.
Bowl Two: The remaining 26 clubs will be placed in this bowl. Each team from this bowl will be drawn against one of the European teams to complete the first six ties of the round. The remaining 10 ties will then be drawn from the teams left in Bowl Two.
This new format will only apply to the third round, with subsequent rounds reverting to the traditional free-draw system.
The draw will take place live on Sky Sports following the conclusion of the Nottingham Forest versus Newcastle United match at the City Ground.
This change aims to ensure that no fixtures clash and that all participating teams can compete effectively in both domestic and European competitions.
