New Political Movement ‘The Alternative’ Aims To Reshape Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

New Political Movement ‘The Alternative’ Aims To Reshape Nigeria’s 2027 Elections.

A fresh political platform, known as The Alternative, has emerged with an ambitious vision to challenge Nigeria’s political status quo and secure power in the 2027 general elections. The movement was officially unveiled in Jos during the North Central Zone National Opposition Movement town hall meeting held at the Fox Hotel.

Segun Sowunmi, a former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State and convener of The Alternative, outlined the movement’s objectives, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s existing political structure. He described The Alternative as a grassroots effort aimed at empowering credible candidates and restoring public trust in governance.

Sowunmi criticised Nigeria’s democracy as plagued by corruption and self-serving leadership. He called for robust reforms, including stronger laws to address political misconduct, a review of the roles of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and improved accountability within opposition parties and the judiciary.

He also emphasised the need to re-educate Nigerians on civic duties, particularly voting, stating, “Low voter turnout and vote-selling undermine democracy. Every citizen must actively participate in the political process rather than ceding power to a few individuals.”

The platform seeks to create a more inclusive political environment by encouraging citizens to build local structures and support candidates who align with their values. Sowunmi referred to the movement as a “liberation effort” for Nigerians across all socio-economic divides.

Adai Edwin Adai, Chairman of the North Central Zone, National Opposition Movement, echoed Sowunmi’s concerns, accusing INEC of turning into an “election-rigging institution.” He stressed the urgent need for electoral reforms to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Sowunmi revealed that he has sought clarity on Atiku Abubakar’s plans to run for the presidency in 2027 but has not received a definitive response. “He (Atiku) has not said no or yes, and I respect him. Any sensible person will know that the burden of an election is heavy,” Sowunmi stated.

He also clarified that The Alternative is not intended to become a new political party but aims to amplify citizens’ voices and foster political engagement. Sowunmi reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, stating that the movement’s primary goal is to ensure good governance, regardless of which party holds power.

With its focus on grassroots mobilisation and systemic reform, The Alternative represents a bold step towards addressing Nigeria’s political challenges. As the 2027 elections approach, the movement’s impact on the nation’s political landscape remains to be seen.
