The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) revealed significant progress in electricity metering across the nation.
According to the report released through its official channels, a total of 43,631 electricity consumers were provided with meters by distribution companies in December 2023. This development brings the total number of metered electricity customers to 5,842,726, marking a notable advancement in the nation’s efforts to address metering challenges.
The report highlighted that the metering rate during the period stood at 44.39%, signifying steady improvement in meter deployment across the electricity distribution network. Notably, Ikeja Distribution Company (DisCo) emerged as the leader in metering rate, achieving an impressive 72.52%, with 2,562 customers metered in December. Following closely is Abuja DisCo, boasting a metering rate of 60.55%, having metered 6,620 customers during the same period.
In addition to metering progress, the report outlined an increase in the total number of registered customers in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), reaching 13,162,572 in December 2023. Ibadan DisCo recorded the highest number of registered customers, with 2,401,864 connected to its network, followed by Abuja DisCo, which reported 1,414,356 registered customers.
Despite these advancements, the report also shed light on challenges encountered within the industry. NERC disclosed receiving a total of 91,576 complaints during the period under review, with metering issues comprising the majority, accounting for 57,119 cases. Billing concerns followed closely, with 17,734 reported cases. Other grievances included interruptions, voltage fluctuations, disconnections, load shedding, delays, and miscellaneous complaints.
