In the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), revealed that a total of 50,901 drug offenders, including 46 barons, have been apprehended in the last 38 months.
Providing insight into the agency’s relentless efforts, Marwa disclosed that, out of these apprehensions, 9,034 individuals were successfully prosecuted and convicted. Additionally, the agency seized over 7,561 metric tonnes of illicit substances during this period, sending a strong message to drug cartels and their kingpins about Nigeria’s unwavering stance against such criminal activities.
This announcement came during the opening and handover ceremony of a new operational facility generously donated to the NDLEA by the British Government.
Recognising the significance of this support, Marwa expressed gratitude, emphasising how it will bolster the agency’s capacity to combat substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking across Nigeria.
Marwa underscored the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the UK in the global fight against drug trafficking, highlighting the collaborative efforts aimed at neutralising transnational organised criminal activities.
He described the newly inaugurated building complex not only as a physical structure but also as a symbol of the steadfast alliance between the two nations, reflecting years of cooperation, mutual trust, and shared determination in combating one of the most pressing threats to society.
