The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a strong rebuke against former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore following his derogatory comments labeling the student body as “officially useless.”
In a statement released by NANS Senate President, Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the organisation demanded an immediate retraction of Sowore’s remarks and a public apology. They vehemently rejected the disparaging comments, emphasising NANS’ longstanding commitment to advocating for students’ rights and welfare.
The statement highlighted NANS’ pivotal role in addressing critical issues within the educational sector, including insufficient funding, poor infrastructure, and the overall enhancement of Nigeria’s educational system.
Describing Sowore’s words as disheartening, the statement underscored the irony of a former student leader denigrating an organisation that has historically championed student causes. It warned Sowore of the consequences of failing to retract his statement, stressing the resolve of Nigerian students to defend NANS’ integrity and the rights of all students.
Furthermore, NANS emphasised the importance of constructive dialogue and collaboration in tackling educational challenges, urging Sowore to join hands with stakeholders for sustainable solutions.
The organisation concluded by reiterating its demand for a public apology from Sowore, emphasizing the need for unity and collective action among Nigerian students to address pressing issues in the educational sector.
