Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has directed the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to pursue individuals advocating for the overthrow of the government, particularly those targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This was disclosed through a statement by Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Press and Information at the Ministry of Defence, who stated the need to confront what was described as “criminals and enemies of democracy.” These individuals, according to the statement, have circulated viral videos and incendiary messages on various media platforms, inciting unrest and urging military intervention to disrupt the constitutional order.
Minister Matawalle condemned such calls for military intervention, stating the military’s commitment to upholding democratic values. He dismissed the notion of military involvement in governance, highlighting the military’s alignment with democratic norms and its constitutional mandate to defend the nation, not to intervene in political affairs.
He warned against the consequences awaiting those advocating for the unconstitutional ousting of President Tinubu, labeling them as “agents of darkness” seeking to undermine Nigeria’s democratic progress. Matawalle reiterated that under the current administration, there would be no tolerance for subversive activities aimed at destabilizing the government.
Stressing on the importance of elected leadership and the military’s role in protecting the constitution, Matawalle underscored the need for a harmonious relationship between civilian authorities and the armed forces.
