Minister Of Power Adelabu Announces Bid For Oyo Governorship In 2027.
Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship election in 2027 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner. The announcement was made on Friday, 4 July 2025, during consultative meetings with APC leaders and stakeholders in Ogbomoso and Oyo zones, held at the residence of prominent party chieftain Ayoade Adeseun in Ogbomoso.
Addressing party members, Adelabu outlined his ambition to lead Oyo State, emphasising his readiness to draw on experience gained from previous electoral contests in 2019 and 2023. “I’m here to tell you that I want to contest for governor of Oyo State in 2027. I’m ready to put to the test all the experience I’ve gathered from the past two elections,” he stated. The minister, who previously ran as the APC’s governorship candidate in 2019 and later as the Accord Party’s candidate in 2023, expressed confidence in his ability to compete fairly, assuring stakeholders that the APC would not impose candidates in the upcoming primaries. “I’m up to the task. I want to show that I can withstand and survive competition and come out victorious,” he added.
Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, called for unity within the APC, urging aggrieved members to set aside past differences to focus on reclaiming the state from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), currently led by Governor Seyi Makinde. “I will run an inclusive government where everybody will be involved in the governance of the state, and no one will be left behind,” he promised, highlighting his vision for a collaborative administration. He also appealed for support from Ogbomoso, a key political zone, noting that its unified factions could play a pivotal role in the election.
The minister’s consultations mark the beginning of a statewide campaign to build a strong coalition ahead of 2027. Adelabu, who returned to the APC after his 2023 stint with the Accord Party, also voiced support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, aligning his ambition with the party’s broader national goals. His declaration has sparked enthusiasm among supporters, who see his experience and determination as vital to challenging the PDP’s hold on Oyo State.
