Mikel Merino Fires Arsenal To Victory Over Chelsea.
Mikel Merino’s first-half goal proved decisive as Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Chelsea, cutting the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to 12 points.
Both sides entered the match without their first-choice strikers, with Arsenal’s Kai Havertz sidelined for the season due to a hamstring injury and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson also unavailable. The Blues were further weakened by the absence of Cole Palmer, their standout performer this season, making this their first match without him since last April’s 5-0 defeat to Arsenal.
Arsenal started strongly, with Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Declan Rice all testing Chelsea’s defence in the early stages. Their breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Martin Ødegaard delivered a curling corner into the box, and Merino flicked the ball past a stretching Robert Sánchez.
Chelsea Struggle to Respond
Chelsea’s best opportunity to level the score came when Marc Cucurella’s powerful shot slipped through David Raya’s hands, only for the ball to roll just past the post. Sánchez, recently reinstated as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper, had an eventful evening, struggling under pressure from Arsenal’s deliveries into the box and drawing jeers from the home crowd whenever he had the ball at his feet.
Despite his shaky moments, Sánchez produced an excellent save to deny Merino in the second half. However, Chelsea were unable to find the equaliser, leaving Arsenal to claim an important victory in their pursuit of Liverpool at the top of the table.
