Manchester Rivals Clash in Community Shield Showdown.
Premier League champions Manchester City will face off against FA Cup winners Manchester United in the Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday, kicking off the new season with a thrilling Manchester derby at 15:00 BST.
This highly anticipated match is a repeat of the 2024 FA Cup final, where United triumphed 2-1 over City at the same venue just 77 days ago. The last time the two Manchester giants met in the Community Shield was in 2011, with United emerging victorious in a 3-2 encounter.
Erik ten Hag’s United side, who hold the record with 21 Community Shield victories, will begin their Premier League campaign next Friday, hosting Fulham at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, City, who secured a record fourth consecutive league title last season, will start their title defence away at Chelsea on Sunday, 18 August.
“It’s about a trophy, so we will put out a team that is very competitive to win this trophy,” Ten Hag stated, underlining the importance of the match.
City manager Pep Guardiola also expressed his determination, saying his players will “go for it” at Wembley. “It is important, it’s a final against United, but part of it is to try to refine ourselves, step by step after a break for most of the players,” he added.
This marks the third Manchester derby at Wembley in just over a year, following City’s victory over United in the 2023 FA Cup final. If the scores are level after 90 minutes on Saturday, the match will go straight to penalties.
The stage is set for another fierce battle between these two historic rivals as they vie for the first silverware of the season.
