Manchester City’s Struggles Deepen With Defeat At Aston Villa

Manchester City’s Struggles Deepen With Defeat At Aston Villa.

Manchester City’s disappointing season continued as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa, with goals from Jhon Durán and Morgan Rogers rendering Phil Foden’s late strike a mere consolation.

The result saw City drop to sixth in the Premier League, nine points behind leaders Liverpool, despite having played two games more. Meanwhile, Villa leapfrogged the defending champions into fifth, keeping their hopes of a top-four finish alive.

City have now endured nine defeats in their last 12 games across all competitions, extending their winless streak on the road to eight matches. Manager Pep Guardiola made six changes to the side that lost the Manchester derby last week, but it did little to spark a revival in what was another lacklustre display.

Villa, who had only won three of their previous 11 league games, showed renewed determination. They were rarely troubled by a subdued City side, with goalkeeper Emi Martinez making an important save from Phil Foden in the first half. Villa capitalised on City’s defensive vulnerabilities, setting the tone for the match within seconds of the opening whistle.

City’s backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, deputising for the injured Ederson, was called into action immediately. He denied Pau Torres with a spectacular save that tipped the ball onto the bar, just moments after stopping a close-range effort from Durán, following a costly error by Josko Gvardiol.

Villa took the lead in the 16th minute when Youri Tielemans delivered a perfectly weighted through-ball to Rogers, who unselfishly set up Durán for a simple finish.

City struggled to respond, and their fate was sealed in the 65th minute when Rogers, a former City player who never made a senior appearance for the club, struck a precise low shot past Ortega to double Villa’s advantage. Foden’s injury-time goal offered little solace as City’s woes deepened.

With the title defence now in serious jeopardy, Guardiola faces mounting pressure to turn things around as City’s season continues to spiral downward. Meanwhile, Villa’s victory serves as a timely boost to their ambitions of breaking into the Champions League places.
