Magomed Ankalaev Stuns Alex Pereira To Claim UFC Light-Heavyweight Title

Magomed Ankalaev Stuns Alex Pereira To Claim UFC Light-Heavyweight Title.

Magomed Ankalaev secured the UFC light-heavyweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Alex Pereira at UFC 313 in Las Vegas.

The Russian fighter dominated much of the contest, pressuring Pereira and limiting the Brazilian’s ability to land his signature powerful strikes. Ankalaev’s composed and strategic approach earned him the judges’ scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46.

“I can’t put it into words, it’s been such a long wait to reach my dream – the title is on my waist,” said Ankalaev. “I don’t think anything surprised me. I think I could have done a better job in the fight, but I’m happy I won. I want to thank my team, Russia, Dagestan, everybody – we have another belt now.”

Pereira Falls Short in Toughest Test Yet

Since making his UFC debut in 2021, Pereira has risen to stardom, becoming a two-division champion in just seven fights – the fastest in UFC history. After winning the middleweight title, he moved up to light-heavyweight and successfully defended his belt three times in 2023, earning him the UFC Fighter of the Year award alongside Ilia Topuria.

However, Ankalaev proved to be his toughest challenge yet. While many predicted the Russian’s wrestling would be the key factor, it was his striking and relentless pressure that made the difference, preventing Pereira from imposing his usual dominance.

Ankalaev’s Road to Redemption

Unbeaten since 2018, Ankalaev entered the fight on an 11-bout winning streak and was determined to redeem himself after a 2022 title opportunity ended in a split draw against Jan Blachowicz.

Pereira started strong, landing a series of leg kicks that visibly affected Ankalaev. By the end of the first round, the Russian’s calf showed signs of damage, but he responded in the second round with well-timed punch combinations, rocking the champion with a straight left just before the bell.

As the fight progressed, Pereira continued his leg-kicking strategy, while Ankalaev countered with precise striking and well-placed front kicks. The Russian then turned to his grappling, pressing Pereira against the cage and wearing him down in the later rounds.

In the closing moments, Pereira attempted to rally with more leg kicks and a high kick, even managing to stun Ankalaev with a jab. However, the Russian finished strong, controlling the final exchanges against the cage.

Both fighters raised their hands in anticipation of victory, but it was Ankalaev who got the nod from the judges, securing his 12th consecutive win and his first UFC title.

Pereira Vows to Bounce Back.

The loss ended Pereira’s impressive light-heavyweight run and denied him a fourth title defence within a year. Despite the setback, the Brazilian remained determined.

“I knew it would be a war. He put some pressure on in the second round, but putting me up against the cage, he didn’t really do anything,” Pereira said. “I’m going to keep training. I feel good, I’ll have a few days off and then get back in training. This is my life.”

Gaethje Returns to Winning Ways

In the co-main event, American Justin Gaethje secured a decision victory over Azerbaijan’s Rafael Fiziev in an action-packed contest.

Fighting for the first time since his knockout loss to Max Holloway a year ago, Gaethje showcased his striking skills and resilience, earning a well-deserved win.

With Ankalaev now holding the light-heavyweight title, attention turns to what lies ahead in one of the UFC’s most competitive divisions.
