Lookman Responds to Criticism With Stunning Brace In Atalanta’s 5-0 Victory
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman silenced critics in emphatic fashion by scoring twice in Atalanta’s resounding 5-0 victory over Empoli on Sunday.
Following Atalanta’s midweek Champions League play-off defeat to Club Brugge, Lookman faced scrutiny, particularly after missing a crucial penalty. However, he responded in style, playing a pivotal role in his team’s dominant performance.
Atalanta took an early lead through a fortunate deflection off Emmanuel Gyasi, which looped over the goalkeeper into the net. Moments later, Lookman’s clever cross was flicked on by Berat Djimsiti for Mateo Retegui to double the advantage.
In the 43rd minute, Lookman showcased his composure with a clinical right-footed finish in a one-on-one situation with Empoli’s goalkeeper. The Nigerian forward struck again in the 55th minute, expertly rounding the keeper before slotting home.
With these goals, Lookman has now surpassed Simy Nwankwo to become the second-highest-scoring Nigerian in Serie A history, with 36 goals—trailing only Victor Osimhen, who leads with 65.
