Lagos To Make History As First African City To Host E1 Racing Championship.

Lagos is set to etch its name in the annals of global sport, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announcing that the city will host the E1 Racing Championship on 4 and 5 October 2025. This landmark event marks the first time an African city will stage the innovative electric boat racing series, spotlighting Lagos as a hub of progress, sustainability, and cultural vibrancy.

Speaking after attending the championship in Monaco over the weekend, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his excitement about the upcoming event, describing it as a testament to the power of innovation and bold vision. “The E1 Racing Championship is a groundbreaking fusion of technology and determination,” he said. “Hosting it in Lagos underscores our city’s readiness to lead in the global dialogue on clean energy, sustainability, and advanced marine transportation.”

The E1 Championship, a pioneering series featuring electric-powered boats, aligns with Lagos’ ambitions to embrace eco-friendly solutions while showcasing its dynamic spirit. The event is expected to draw international visitors, offering a platform to highlight the city’s rich culture, infectious energy, and warm hospitality. From the bustling markets of Balogun to the serene shores of Lagos Lagoon, the championship will provide a global stage for the city’s unique identity.

Governor Sanwo-Olu extended heartfelt gratitude to Afreximbank for their pivotal role in making this historic event possible. Their support, including their investment in Team Drogba, reflects a shared belief in Lagos’ potential to shine on the world stage. “Afreximbank’s partnership is more than financial; it’s a vote of confidence in our vision for a forward-thinking, sustainable Lagos,” he noted.

The championship is poised to be a transformative moment for Lagos, blending world-class sport with a celebration of the city’s heritage and aspirations. As preparations begin, anticipation is building for an event that will not only thrill motorsport enthusiasts but also position Lagos as a trailblazer in Africa’s sustainable future. With the world watching, Lagos is ready to showcase its boundless potential and vibrant spirit.
