Lagos Governor Hosts South African EFF Leader Julius Malema In Diplomatic Visit.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed Mr. Julius Malema, President of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), to Lagos House, Marina, on Saturday, 23 August 2025, in a significant courtesy visit that underscored the strengthening of ties between Nigeria and South Africa. The visit, which took place ahead of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Annual General Conference in Enugu, highlighted Malema’s commitment to fostering African unity and addressing shared challenges.

The South African opposition leader, known for his outspoken advocacy for economic justice and Pan-Africanism, was accompanied by a delegation that included Babatunde Ogala, Chairman of the NBA Conference Logistics Committee, Deputy Secretary General Leigh-Ann Mathys, National Spokesperson Thembi Msane, and Head of Presidency Vuyani Pambo. Governor Sanwo-Olu warmly received the group, presenting Malema with two symbolic gifts: a commemorative Eyo gift pack, representing Lagos’ rich cultural heritage, and a plaque bearing the official seal of the Lagos State Government.

During the visit, Malema signed the visitors’ book at Lagos House, a gesture that symbolises respect, friendship, and mutual recognition between the state and the EFF leader. The act was noted as a lasting record of the visit, marking a moment in Lagos’ official history. Malema, who is set to deliver the keynote address at the NBA conference, running from 22 to 30 August 2025, used the occasion to reiterate his strong stance against xenophobia and his vision for a united Africa.

The visit was widely covered by Nigerian media, with reports emphasising the warm reception and the significance of the engagement. Malema’s presence in Lagos comes as part of his broader mission to engage with African leaders and advocate for policies that address inequality and promote continental solidarity. The Nigerian Bar Association’s conference, where Malema will speak, is expected to draw legal professionals, policymakers, and thought leaders to discuss critical issues facing the continent.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s hosting of Malema reflects Lagos’ role as a diplomatic and cultural hub, fostering dialogue and collaboration across African nations. The visit has been hailed as a step towards deepening ties between Nigeria and South Africa, with both leaders expressing optimism about future cooperation.
