Labour Party Unites Behind Senator Nenadi Usman With Vote Of Confidence.

The Labour Party (LP) has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering democracy, strengthening internal unity, and driving reforms across Nigeria, as key stakeholders unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Senator Nenadi Usman, the party’s Interim National Chairman. The resolution was adopted during a high-profile virtual meeting held on Thursday, 7 August 2025, attended by prominent party figures, marking a significant step towards consolidating the party’s position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to Senator Usman, the party expressed strong support for her leadership, commending her efforts to steer the LP through a period of internal challenges and political realignment. The meeting, which drew an impressive array of party stalwarts, resolved to deepen initiatives aimed at reinforcing democratic institutions and sustaining the principles of democracy in Nigeria. “The meeting unanimously commended the interim leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman and passed a resounding vote of confidence in her stewardship as Interim National Chairman,” the statement read.

The virtual gathering included notable attendees such as Peter Obi, the LP’s 2023 presidential candidate; Dr Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State; Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Interim National Secretary; and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the party’s 2023 Lagos State governorship candidate. Other key figures present were Deputy National Chairmen Mohammed Usman Misau and Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Abia State Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, Senators Victor Umeh and Okey Ezea, former acting National Chairman Mrs Maria Labeke, and former Nigerian Bar Association President Olumide Akpata, alongside representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The vote of confidence comes amid efforts to resolve the LP’s protracted leadership crisis, with Usman’s appointment as Interim National Chairman on 31 July 2025 by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) marking a pivotal moment.

The LP’s stakeholders reiterated their commitment to internal cohesion, democratic consolidation, and national development, pledging to position the party for electoral success in 2027. The meeting’s resolutions reflect a strategic focus on uniting the party’s ranks and addressing recent political developments, particularly following INEC’s rejection of candidates fielded by the Abure faction for upcoming bye-elections and the 2026 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory.

Senator Usman, a former Minister of Finance, has been praised for her robust leadership, with stakeholders expressing optimism that her tenure will strengthen the LP’s internal democracy and enhance its electoral prospects. The party’s renewed focus on unity and reform signals its determination to emerge as a formidable force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
