Labour Party Commences Preliminary Preparations For 2027 General Election Amidst Turmoil, Abure Returns As National Chairman

Preliminary maneuvers for the forthcoming 2027 general election by the Labour Party (LP) have seemingly commenced, marked by internal strife and declarations of intent.

GOVIMA  reported that yesterday, the opposition party made significant announcements, including granting the right of first refusal to its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and reserving the governorship ticket in Imo State for Governor Alex Otti, its sole elected governor.

The LP convened its national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, where Julius Abure emerged as the interim chairman, amidst a backdrop of turmoil. The convention, initially planned for Umuahia, Abia State, faced relocation due to escalating party crises.

Disruption loomed as tensions rose at the Grand Swiss Hotel, the convention venue, with some members threatening to derail proceedings. Police intervention resulted in the arrest of seven individuals allegedly distributing incendiary materials critical of the party leadership.

Notable absences were observed, with key figures such as Peter Obi, Alex Otti, and Senator Victor Umeh notably missing. However, Otti’s Deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, was present.

The convention proceeded, with several officers elected by voice votes, including Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim as National Secretary, and Clement Ojukwu and Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi as Deputy National Chairmen. Despite objections from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by Joe Ajaero, the convention concluded with Abure assuming leadership.

In his address, Abure pledged proactive and purposeful leadership, vowing to strengthen the LP as a formidable opposition force. He dismissed allegations against the party, emphasising its commitment to its ideology and integrity.

A communiqué issued by the party highlighted concerns over national security and economic deterioration, urging President Tinubu to intervene.

However, Ajaero vehemently rejected the convention’s outcome, disputing Abure’s chairmanship and asserting the position of the NLC and other stakeholders.

As the LP navigates internal discord and external challenges, its trajectory towards the 2027 general election remains under scrutiny, poised for further developments in the political landscape.
