Espanyol Stun Real Madrid To Halt Title Charge.
La Liga side Espanyol pulled off a stunning upset over Real Madrid, denying Carlo Ancelotti’s side a chance to move four points clear at the top of the table.
After absorbing an immense amount of pressure from the formidable Real side, the home team struck on the counter-attack. In the 85th minute, Carlos Romero calmly slotted the ball beyond Thibaut Courtois at the back post, sealing a memorable victory for Espanyol.
Real Madrid had earlier believed they had taken the lead in the first half when Vinicius Jr curled a beautiful shot into the far corner. However, the goal was disallowed after Kylian Mbappe was deemed to have committed a foul in the build-up.
The visitors continued to press in the second half, with Rodrygo coming closest to breaking the deadlock. The Brazilian jinked inside before prodding an effort off the post, only to be thwarted by a determined dive from Espanyol keeper Joan Garcia. Minutes later, Garcia produced his seventh and finest save of the game, tipping Mbappe’s arrowing effort wide towards the far corner.
Tensions were high on the Real bench when Romero was only shown a yellow card for a calf-high challenge on the back of Mbappe. The Spanish defender’s eventual winner, arriving 24 minutes later, proved decisive in moving his side clear of the relegation battle.
Real’s woes were compounded by concerns over Antonio Rudiger’s fitness, as the German defender was replaced in the first half with a suspected hamstring injury. Despite pushing in the final moments – with goalkeeper Courtois even venturing forward for a corner – Ancelotti’s side could not find an equaliser.
The result marks Real Madrid’s third defeat of the season, effectively ending a four-game winning streak. In contrast, second-placed Atletico Madrid enjoyed a 2-0 home win over Mallorca and now sit just one point behind Real, ahead of their forthcoming Madrid derby next Saturday.
With Real Madrid set to face Manchester City in the Champions League play-offs on 11 February, the loss against Espanyol could prove costly in their bid for domestic and European glory. Meanwhile, Espanyol’s spirited display provides a much-needed boost as they look to climb away from the bottom three.
