Kylian Mbappe fired home a controversial penalty deep into stoppage time as PSG rescued a 1-1 draw and denied Newcastle United a famous win at the Parc des Princes.
Luis Enrique’s side were keen to try and avenge the 4-1 drubbing they suffered at St James’ Park earlier in the campaign and made a lightning start with Fabian Ruiz and Mbappe going close.
However, The Magpies rode out the initial storm and then silenced the boisterous home support on 24 minutes when Alexander Isak tucked in the rebound after Gianluigi Donnarumma spilled Miguel Almiron’s 20-yard shot.
PSG were left frustrated for long spells, but when they did manufacture an opening, they were mostly blown over by winger Bradley Bracola or stopped by the magnificent Nick Pope until the last-gasp drama led to the cruel twist that denied the visitors all three points.
The result means Newcastle sit third in Group F on five points. PSG are second on seven points with leaders Borussia Dortmund, who are now through to the last 16, on 10 points. AC Milan are fourth on five points with an inferior goal difference.
Newcastle will now conclude their Group F campaign at home to AC Milan on December 13 in the knowledge that they need Dortmund to do them a favour when they host PSG if they are to reach the knockout stage.
