Kwara United Crowned 2025 Nigeria FA Cup Champions In Historic Triumph.

Kwara United Football Club have written their name in Nigeria’s Football history book, as the Ilorin-based side clinched their first-ever Nigeria FA Cup title, defeating Abakaliki FC 4-3 in a thrilling penalty shootout at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on Saturday, 28 June 2025. The victory marks the first major trophy in the club’s 28-year history and secures their place in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup, a significant milestone for the Afonja Warriors.

The final was a tense, goalless affair through 90 minutes of regulation time, with both teams displaying grit and determination. Kwara United, under the guidance of coach Tunde Sanni, faced a spirited Abakaliki FC, a second-division side that had captured national attention with their fairy-tale run, toppling giants like Enyimba and Katsina United en route to the final. Despite Abakaliki’s resilience, Kwara United held their nerve in the shootout, converting four of their penalties while Abakaliki managed three, sealing a landmark victory for the Harmony Boys.

The match saw moments of brilliance, with Kwara United’s Junior Aimufua striking the woodwork in the first half and Wasiu Alalade’s effort in the 57th minute ruled out for offside. Abakaliki FC, nicknamed the Rice Boys, also had their chances, with striker Chukwudi Okoro heading narrowly wide. Ultimately, it was Kwara United’s composure from the penalty spot that made the difference, ending a 49-year wait for a major trophy for a Kwara-based club since Alyufsalam Rocks’ loss in the 1976 final.

Standout performances came from Kwara United’s midfield dynamo Afeez Nosiru, whose calm passing and intelligent positioning controlled the game, and veteran goalkeeper Suraju Aiyeleso, whose experience bolstered the backline. Forwards Wasiu Alalade and Isa Gatta also played pivotal roles, with their relentless pressure troubling Abakaliki’s defence throughout.

The victory sparked jubilant scenes among fans in Ilorin and beyond, with social media posts reflecting the euphoria. “History is made! CAF Confederation Cup, here we come!” exclaimed one supporter on X, encapsulating the pride and excitement sweeping Kwara State. The win not only delivers silverware but also a chance for Kwara United to shine on the continental stage alongside Abia Warriors in the CAF Confederation Cup, while Remo Stars and Rivers United represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League.

Coach Tunde Sanni, speaking before the final, had described his team’s mission to secure a continental ticket, a goal they achieved in dramatic fashion. “This is more than just a cup win,” he said post-match. “It’s a reward for years of hard work and belief from everyone associated with Kwara United.”

The triumph was also a moment of pride for Kwara State’s leadership, with Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, rallying behind the team. Businessman Mallam Tunji Mohammed had earlier urged the squad to “rewrite the story of Kwara football,” a call they answered emphatically.

For Abakaliki FC, the defeat was a bittersweet end to a remarkable campaign. The Ebonyi State side, relegated to the Nationwide League One, won hearts with their giant-killing exploits, and their players, including captain Timothy Cyril and striker Chukwudi Okoro, vowed to return stronger.

As Kwara United prepare for their continental adventure, the 2025 Nigeria FA Cup victory will be remembered as a defining moment, etching their name into the annals of Nigerian football history. For the fans, players, and the entire state, this is a triumph to savour—a testament to perseverance, unity, and the beautiful game.
