West Ham Appoints Julen Lopetegui as New Head Coach
West Ham United has announced the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as their new head coach. The 57-year-old Spaniard, who inked a deal earlier this month, takes over from David Moyes on a two-year contract, with an option for a third year.
Lopetegui, previously at Wolves, expressed his excitement about joining the Hammers. “I feel very happy, first of all, to be able to be part of the future of this big club,” he stated. “We had other opportunities, but I am very happy that West Ham chose me because I chose West Ham too, so we are really happy about this.”
West Ham confirmed earlier this month that David Moyes, who led the club to a Europa Conference League victory in 2023, would depart at the end of the season. Despite securing ninth place in the Premier League, Moyes faced increasing pressure due to a poor run of results.
Lopetegui’s tenure officially begins on July 1, coinciding with the start of pre-season preparations, which include a two-week trip to the United States for matches against Crystal Palace and Wolves. “I feel that we have a fantastic platform,” Lopetegui added. “My ambition as a coach is always to be better and better, to achieve more and bigger aims and to encourage and improve the players, the team, and to compete because football is about this – to compete.”
Lopetegui brings an impressive resume, having coached Spain and Real Madrid, and winning the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020. He joined Wolves in November 2022, guiding them from the bottom of the Premier League to a 13th-place finish before resigning due to frustrations over the club’s financial situation.
“Julen lives and breathes football,” said West Ham’s technical director Tim Steidten. “He thinks deeply about the game, he is tactically astute and he has shown he can adapt to work in different leagues, in different countries, with national teams, and in each situation he has shown his outstanding qualities.”
West Ham’s joint chairman David Sullivan added, “We believe this appointment will ensure a strong opportunity to build on the positive progress made in recent seasons, helping the club to move forward in the direction that aligns with our ambitions.”
Lopetegui Expected to Hit the Ground Running according to Simon Stone, BBC Sport Chief Football News Reporter.
Julen Lopetegui has been keen to return to the Premier League since leaving Wolves. West Ham has now provided the former Real Madrid and Spain boss with that opportunity. Lopetegui’s tenure at Wolves showcased his ability to navigate challenging circumstances, but his time at Real Madrid and Sevilla had mixed results.
Many West Ham fans were eager for a change from Moyes, who, despite his achievements, was often criticized for negative tactics. Lopetegui steps into a club with heightened expectations and uncertainty surrounding key player Lucas Paqueta.
Arguably, Lopetegui is entering one of the most stable periods for West Ham in recent years, and he will be expected to deliver results promptly.
