President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima will now be required to pay tollgate fees when using Nigerian airports.
This decision comes after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the removal of exemptions for all airport users from tollgate fees.
The approval followed a memorandum presented by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo. He highlighted that the government was losing over 82% of potential revenue due to e-tag exemptions, which previously included the president and vice president.
However, President Tinubu overruled this exemption, directing that both he and Vice President Shettima should also pay the fees. Keyamo revealed this change during a post-FEC media briefing, expressing regret that wealthy Very Important Persons (VIPs), who should have been paying, have not been doing so.
The minister emphasised that only poor people had been charged at the tollgates, a practice that will now end with the new directive ensuring that all users, regardless of status, pay the tollgate fees.
