Nigeria Fulfils 100% ECOWAS Financial Obligation For First Time In 19 Years.

Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone by fulfilling 100 per cent of its financial obligations to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the first time in nearly two decades.

The payment, totalling ₦84 billion and $54 million, covers Nigeria’s community levy for the entirety of 2023 and extends to July 2024.

The announcement was made by Dr Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, during the 66th Ordinary Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. The summit was held at the State House in Abuja, where Dr Touray highlighted the importance of this development.

He stated that the payment, made on Friday, 13th December 2024, marks a critical moment in Nigeria’s commitment to fostering regional integration and economic development.

Dr Touray praised the leadership and dedication of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, attributing the achievement to the efforts of the Nigerian government and its citizens. He underscored Nigeria’s pivotal role as a driving force within the ECOWAS community, emphasising its influence on regional cooperation and progress.

This full financial contribution reaffirms Nigeria’s position as a leader in West Africa, demonstrating its commitment to strengthening partnerships and fulfilling its responsibilities within ECOWAS.
