JUST-IN: Man Sentenced To Six Months In Prison For Stealing A Fowl In Ogun State

Man Sentenced To Six Months In Prison For Stealing A Fowl In Ogun State.

A Magistrate’s Court in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, has sentenced 21-year-old Adebanjo Segun to six months in prison after he was found guilty of stealing a fowl. The ruling, delivered earlier today, has sparked conversations across social media platforms, with many expressing a mix of amusement and disbelief at the severity of the punishment for what some are calling a “fowl offence.”

According to details emerging from the court, Segun’s troubles began on 19 February 2025, when he was apprehended for pilfering a hen. The young man, who reportedly pleaded guilty to the charge, faced sentencing under Section 430 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, Nigeria, 2006. The presiding magistrate, delivering the judgement, imposed a six-month custodial sentence without the option of a fine, marking a firm stance against petty theft in the region.

The case has gained traction on X, where users have shared snippets of the story alongside a blend of humorous commentary and serious reflections on justice. One post, echoing the sentiments of many, quipped, “Six months for a fowl? That’s egg-streme!” Others noted that while the crime may seem minor, the court’s decision underscores a broader effort to deter theft, no matter how small the prize.

Reports indicate that this isn’t Segun’s first brush with the law over a feathered target. Investigations revealed he had committed a similar offence in December 2024, though he was pardoned at the time as a supposed first-time offender. This history likely influenced the magistrate’s decision to hand down a custodial sentence, rather than a lighter penalty.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ogun State Command, played a key role in bringing Segun to justice. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ogbonnaya Dyke, confirmed the details in a statement, highlighting that the arrest followed a swift response to the theft on 19 February. Segun was arraigned the following day, with the court wasting no time in delivering its verdict.

While the sentence has raised eyebrows, it’s not without precedent in Ogun State, where magistrate courts have recently taken a hard line on theft-related offences. Just weeks ago, another individual, 20-year-old Kazeem Tobi, was sentenced to six months for stealing a generator worth N120,000, suggesting a pattern of strict enforcement in the region.

For now, Adebanjo Segun will serve his time at a correctional facility, a stark reminder that in Ago-Iwoye, even a humble fowl carries significant legal weight. As the story continues to trend on X, it’s clear this unusual case has captured the public’s imagination, blending a touch of absurdity with a lesson in accountability.
