Heartland FC Players and Officials Injured in Road Accident En Route Pre-Season Tournament.
Players and officials of Heartland FC, the Owerri-based football club, were involved in a road accident on Friday while travelling to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, for the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT Pre-Season Tournament.
The unfortunate incident occurred at Umunna, near Okigwe, within Imo State. According to a statement released by the club shortly after the accident, the team’s bus was attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle when it collided with another vehicle that had been carelessly parked following a previous accident.
Fortunately, there were no fatalities reported, but several players and officials sustained injuries and were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of the injuries and the condition of those affected have not yet been fully disclosed.
The accident has undoubtedly cast a shadow over the team’s preparations for the pre-season tournament in Abakaliki, which was intended to serve as a warm-up for the upcoming football season.
