Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper Peter Fregene Critically Ill, Appeals For Help.
Peter Fregene, a legendary former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has been reported critically ill and urgently in need of financial assistance. This development was disclosed in a heartfelt statement released by his former football colleague, Segun Odegbami.
Fregene, who once guarded Nigeria’s goalposts with distinction during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, is currently receiving treatment at Obule Medical Centre in Sapele, Delta State. According to Odegbami, the ex-goalkeeper requires immediate financial support to cover medical costs and facilitate his transfer to the Ohara Teaching Hospital, also in Delta State.
In his statement, Odegbami made a passionate appeal to football-loving Nigerians, encouraging them to come to Fregene’s aid. He particularly reached out to those who fondly remember Fregene’s prowess in the good old days when he stood between the posts during local and international matches for Nigeria.
The plea also expressed frustration at the absence of a structured welfare scheme for retired athletes in the country, calling attention to the growing number of former sports stars facing hardship and health challenges in their later years. Odegbami also noted the reliance on goodwill from a few philanthropic Nigerians in recent years, including the likes of Femi Otedola and Mike Adenuga, urging for prayers and support from all lovers of sports.
Fregene’s plight highlights the ongoing challenges retired sports figures face, and Odegbami’s appeal serves as a reminder of the need for better support systems for Nigeria’s ageing sports heroes.
