Enugu Air Set To Launch With Inaugural Flight On July 7.
Enugu, Nigeria – The skies above Enugu are poised for a historic moment as Enugu Air, the state-owned commercial airline, prepares to launch its inaugural flight on Monday, 7 July 2025. The announcement, made by the Enugu State Government, marks a significant milestone in Governor Peter Mbah’s vision to transform the state into a major aviation hub and bolster its multimodal transport ecosystem.
The launch ceremony will take place at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, as the special guest of honour, joined by other dignitaries. Enugu Air will commence operations with a fleet of three Embraer aircraft—two E170s and one E190—chosen for their efficiency, comfort, and suitability for the regional market. These aircraft will initially connect Enugu with Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, forming a “golden triangle” of key domestic routes, with plans to expand to Kano and other destinations later in the year.
Dr Obi Ozor, the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “Enugu Air is ready to redefine air travel, instil pride, and elevate Enugu’s prominence on the national and global stage.” The airline, operated in partnership with Xejet, a seasoned Nigerian aviation company, aims to prioritise safety, sustainability, and passenger satisfaction. Future plans include expanding the fleet to over six aircraft by the end of 2025 and introducing regional flights across West and Central Africa.
This ambitious venture is part of a broader strategy to boost Enugu’s economy through enhanced connectivity, tourism, and trade. The state government has already made strides in upgrading Akanu Ibiam International Airport, with its concession process over 70% complete and set to finalise by mid-2025. Upgrades will include an international terminal, a cargo terminal, and maintenance facilities, further cementing Enugu’s role as an aviation powerhouse.
The launch of Enugu Air has sparked excitement among residents and industry stakeholders. Social media posts reflect pride in the state’s achievement, with many hailing Governor Mbah’s transformative leadership. Enugu Air joins the ranks of successful state-backed airlines like Ibom Air, setting a precedent for regional governments to drive economic growth through aviation.
As the countdown to 7 July begins, Enugu Air stands ready to take flight, promising not only to connect cities but also to inspire a new era of progress and opportunity for Enugu State and beyond.
