Barcelona President Reveals Reasons for Xavi’s Departure.
Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has detailed the reasons behind the dismissal of Xavi Hernandez as the club’s manager. Despite efforts to retain Xavi until the last week of April, a series of comments made by the former Spain midfielder regarding the club’s financial health and its impact on their competitiveness with Real Madrid led to his departure.
Laporta explained that Xavi’s remarks did not sit well with the board, ultimately prompting the decision to part ways with the club legend. “Xavi told me that he trusted this team, but then some of his statements looked like he changed his speech,” Laporta shared on ‘The President’s Podcast’ on Barça One. “It caused me to rethink, and I had the feeling that I had to make a change, a sentiment shared with the board.”
The decision to terminate Xavi’s contract came within a month of these statements, and Hansi Flick has since been appointed as his replacement. The board believed that a change in leadership was necessary to align with the club’s vision and ambitions, particularly in light of the financial challenges faced by Barcelona.
Xavi’s tenure at Barcelona was marked by efforts to rebuild and guide the team through turbulent times, but his public concerns about the club’s finances and competitive strength ultimately led to his exit. As Barcelona looks ahead under new management, the focus will be on stabilizing the team and restoring its position as a leading force in La Liga and European football.
