The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have issued a stern ultimatum to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), demanding improved power supply across the Southeast region or facing decisive action.
In a statement released by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group accused EEDC of exploiting residents through excessive billing practices and a flawed estimated billing system, which they claim has left many communities in the region in darkness.
The statement highlights grievances including the imposition of exorbitant electricity bills without corresponding power supply, the absence of prepaid metres, and the disruption of electricity services for non-payment of disputed bills.
IPOB further alleges that some communities have been left without functional transformers for years, despite paying for repairs and maintenance.
Expressing outrage at what they perceive as exploitation and neglect by EEDC, IPOB has called for immediate action to rectify the situation.
The group has demanded either improved power supply or the exit of EEDC from the region to make way for more reliable service providers.
Should EEDC fail to meet their demands, IPOB has threatened to take drastic measures, including the shutdown of EEDC offices across the Southeast.
The statement underscores the determination of IPOB to advocate for the welfare of residents in the region and hold service providers accountable for their actions. It signals a potential escalation in tensions between the separatist group and EEDC, with implications for electricity provision in the Southeast.
