The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released its latest findings on internet usage in Nigeria, revealing a notable surge in digital connectivity across the country.

According to the NBS database accessed on Sunday, the total number of internet subscribers reached a significant milestone, standing at 163.8 million as of December 2023.

Despite economic challenges such as the removal of subsidy and the floating of the naira, among other factors, more citizens have gained access to the internet, contributing to this remarkable growth.

Comparing data from the previous year, the NBS reported a 9.07% increase in internet subscribers, with figures rising from 154.8 million to the current 163.8 million. This upward trend also reflects a quarterly growth rate of 1.35%.

For the fourth quarter of 2023, the NBS highlighted the top ten states leading in internet usage across Nigeria:

1. Lagos: Taking the top spot, Lagos boasts a staggering 18.9 million internet users, emphasising its position as a digital hub in the country.
2. Ogun: Following closely behind, Ogun State records 9.5 million internet users, reflecting its significant digital presence.
3. Kano  With 9 million internet users, Kano State secures the third position, showcasing its growing digital landscape.
4. Oyo : Oyo State ranks fourth, with 8.4 million internet users, indicating substantial digital engagement within the state.
5. Kaduna: Kaduna State reports 7.4 million internet users, solidifying its place among the top states in digital connectivity.
6. FCT: The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) stands out with 5.8 million internet users, highlighting the capital’s digital prominence.
7. Rivers: Rivers State follows closely with 5.6 million internet users, demonstrating significant digital adoption among its populace.
8. Adamawa: Adamawa State records 5.4 million internet users, showcasing a growing digital community within the state.
9. Katsina State: With 4.6 million internet users, Katsina State displays notable digital participation among its residents.
10. Delta* Rounding up the top ten, Delta State reports 4.4 million internet users, contributing to the overall digital landscape of the country.

The NBS data underscores the increasing importance of internet connectivity in Nigeria’s socio-economic development, as more individuals and communities embrace digital technologies for communication, commerce, and information access.
