INEC To Provide Hotlines For Media During Ondo Governorship Election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will provide dedicated telephone hotlines for media practitioners covering the forthcoming Ondo State governorship election, scheduled for 16th November 2024. These hotlines will allow journalists to verify any unclear issues before publishing their reports, ensuring accuracy in media coverage.
Amosa Lamidi, the Head of Electoral Operations at INEC, disclosed this during a media workshop organised by the Commission in Akure, the Ondo State capital. Represented by Mr. Tope Onojobi, Lamidi explained that the hotlines would be made available ahead of election day. Additionally, a situation room will be set up to respond to calls and provide real-time updates to journalists throughout the election process.
INEC urged media executives to ensure that their reports are accurate and reliable, stressing that responsible journalism plays a critical role in preventing political violence. Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee at INEC, called on the media to hold politicians, stakeholders, and the Commission accountable for their actions.
Represented by Ondo State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, Olumekun reassured the media that INEC is committed to providing timely and accurate information about the election.
He also highlighted the need for collective efforts to overcome voter apathy, misinformation, and logistical challenges that could hinder the smooth running of the election. “With the media’s collaboration, we can ensure that every eligible voter in Ondo State is prepared to make their voice heard on election day,” he stated.
The hotlines are part of INEC’s broader efforts to promote transparency and integrity in the electoral process, providing an avenue for journalists to report on the election accurately and responsibly.
