Ilkay Gundogan Returns to Manchester City After a Year at Barcelona.
Manchester City have confirmed the re-signing of former captain Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona on an initial one-year deal, with the option to extend for a further 12 months. The German midfielder, who first joined City in 2016 as Pep Guardiola’s inaugural signing, spent seven successful years at the Etihad before moving to Barcelona on a free transfer in 2023.
During his initial spell at Manchester City, Gundogan was a key figure, contributing significantly to the club’s success. He scored 60 goals in 304 appearances and helped the team secure 14 trophies, including multiple Premier League titles and domestic cups. Reflecting on his time at the club, Gundogan said, “My seven years at Manchester City were a time of pure contentment for me, both on and off the pitch. Everyone knows the respect I have for Pep – he is the best manager in the world, and working with him every day makes you a better player. Honestly, I cannot wait to wear the City shirt again.”
Despite an impressive debut season in Spain, Barcelona’s financial difficulties have led to Gundogan’s departure. The club struggled to register new signing Dani Olmo due to La Liga’s spending restrictions, and Gundogan, being one of their highest earners, was allowed to leave on a free transfer. His return to Manchester City is seen as a strategic move for both parties, with Gundogan looking forward to helping his former teammates in the upcoming season.
Gundogan also took to Instagram to express his feelings about leaving Barcelona, stating, “I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad.” He added that while he had been eager to assist Barcelona in the new campaign, he remains grateful for the opportunity to have played for the club.
In addition to his club achievements, Gundogan has had a distinguished international career, earning 82 caps for Germany. However, following Germany’s exit in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 to Spain, Gundogan announced his retirement from international football, marking the end of an era for the experienced midfielder.
Gundogan’s return to Manchester City is expected to bolster the squad as they aim to defend their Premier League title and challenge for more silverware in the upcoming season.
