The trial of Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, continued today with dramatic testimony from Hallie Biden, his former romantic partner and the widow of his late brother Beau Biden.
Hunter Biden faces three felony charges related to purchasing a firearm in 2018 while allegedly addicted to drugs.
Hallie Biden testified about the events of October 23, 2018, when she discovered a gun in Hunter Biden’s car amid remnants of crack cocaine and paraphernalia. She recounted her panic upon finding the firearm and her subsequent decision to discard it in a grocery store trash can to prevent potential harm to Hunter and her children.
Text messages exchanged between Hallie and Hunter Biden in the days following the gun purchase were read in court, highlighting Hunter Biden’s struggles with addiction. Hallie expressed her fear that Hunter might overdose or commit suicide, reinforcing the prosecution’s narrative that Hunter was using drugs at the time of the firearm purchase.
The defense argued that Hunter Biden did not exhibit signs of drug or alcohol abuse when he purchased the gun. Gun store clerk Gordon Cleveland, who sold the firearm, testified that Hunter did not appear to be under the influence at the time of the transaction.
Hallie Biden’s testimony aimed to fill in gaps left by previous witnesses, including ex-girlfriend Zoe Kestan, who testified about Hunter’s drug use before and after the gun purchase but could not confirm his state during October 2018. The prosecution hopes Hallie’s account will bolster their case that Hunter Biden knowingly lied on his firearm application form.
As proceedings continue, the prosecution plans to call several more witnesses before resting their case, potentially by the end of the day. The defense is preparing to call their witnesses, which may include President Joe Biden’s brother James Biden and Hunter’s daughter Naomi Biden, on Friday.
The trial, unprecedented for the son of a sitting president, comes amid high-profile legal battles involving former President Donald Trump.
