House Of Representatives Calls Wike And Others Over Abuja’s Kidnapping

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has been called before the House of Representatives to discuss the steps being taken to maintain peace in the FCT in an effort to guarantee the welfare of the populace.

The heads of the security agencies and the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, were also called by the House to the plenary, which was chaired by Speaker Tajudeen Abass, to get an emergency security briefing and discuss a plan to reduce insecurity in Abuja.

The decision came after Hon. Dominic Okafor’s motion, made in plenary on Wednesday, under topics of urgent national concern regarding the need to stop the FCT’s growing insecurity.

In order to combat the frighteningly rising level of insecurity within the Federal Capital Territory and its environs, including the use of drones, the House effectively ordered the Minister of the Territory to install security cameras throughout the territory and its surroundings, install additional security devices, and outfit security personnel with cutting-edge security gear.

Additionally, all security agencies have been directed to collaborate closely, establish specialized units, and leverage modern technologies like drones to track and apprehend criminal elements operating within and around the territory.

Okafor lamented the disturbing trend of criminal activities in Abuja, citing instances of “one chance” robberies, armed assaults, and frequent kidnappings and killings. He urged swift action, highlighting the need for security agencies to adapt to evolving criminal tactics by digitalizing their operations.

The lawmaker also emphasized the importance of utilizing the National Identification Numbers (NIN) system, which was introduced by the previous administration to enhance security measures. He called for the integration of NIN into security technology to aid in tracing and curbing insecurity across the country.

In response to the summons, stakeholders are expected to provide comprehensive briefings on current security initiatives and propose actionable strategies to restore safety and stability to Abuja.

The parliamentarians also ordered the leaders of all security agencies to work together immediately, train special units within their formations, and establish a tight grip on criminal elements operating within and surrounding the territory.
