Hope For Peace In Rivers State As Tinubu And Fubara Hold Private Talks

Hope For Peace In Rivers State As Tinubu And Fubara Hold Private Talks.

Tensions in Nigeria’s oil-rich Rivers State appear to be easing following weeks of political unrest and protests, as President Bola Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara have reportedly begun discreet negotiations that may redefine the region’s political landscape.

According to sources within the Presidency, both leaders met privately in London last week, shortly after President Tinubu concluded engagements in Paris. The meeting, described as “quiet diplomacy,” was said to have been initiated by Governor Fubara, who is seeking a return to full political control after a state of emergency was declared in Rivers State.

“It is true. Governor Fubara held a private meeting with the president last week. Fubara has promised to make some compromises,” a presidential adviser confirmed under anonymity. “Negotiations are ongoing, but from all indications, his suspension will be lifted before the six-month deadline.”

Another aide revealed that the Rivers State governor is considering joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move believed to be aimed at aligning more closely with President Tinubu’s administration and gaining political protection.

“If Fubara joins the APC, it means the president’s chances of winning Rivers State are much higher,” the aide explained.

However, the development has reportedly unsettled Fubara’s estranged political mentor, Nyesom Wike, who was not included in the meeting. Sources indicate that Wike is displeased with the back-channel talks being held without his involvement.

Despite this, President Tinubu is said to be working on a broader peace arrangement that could bring all key players to the table. A reconciliation meeting involving Fubara, Wike, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly is expected in the coming weeks, aimed at finding a lasting solution to the political crisis.

Observers believe that the president’s intervention, if successful, could not only stabilise the state but also strengthen the APC’s influence in the South-South region ahead of future national elections.

The evolving situation continues to be watched closely both within and beyond Rivers State, with hopes rising that the quiet diplomacy being pursued will yield enduring peace and renewed political cooperation.
