Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), a prominent Nigerian financial institution, has confirmed that there was an attempt to compromise its website.
However, the bank assured its customers that the attack was unsuccessful.
This statement follows an incident on Wednesday night when the bank’s website became inaccessible, prompting concern among customers. Many took to social media to express their frustration over the inability to access the website.
In response to these concerns, GTBank released a statement titled “Clarification on News Reports Regarding The Bank’s Web Domain and Customer Data.” The bank addressed the situation, clarifying that while there was an attempt to compromise its website domain, the hackers were not successful.
“Our attention has been drawn to reports in the media alleging that hackers have seized the Bank’s website, cloned it, and intercepted customer data,” the statement read. “While there was an isolated incident of an attempt to compromise our website domain, we would like to assure all our customers and stakeholders that the Bank’s website has not been cloned, and we do not store customer information on our website. As such, there has been no compromise of customer data.”
GTBank also emphasised that its dedicated team of Information Security Experts is working diligently to restore the website, assuring customers that the site will be back online shortly. The bank urged customers to disregard media reports suggesting otherwise and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding customer data.
