Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, Attributes Nigeria’s Backwardness To Corruption And Greed

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has pointed to corruption, greed, and various other factors as the primary reasons for Nigeria’s continued underdevelopment. He expressed his belief that the nation has not made significant progress on its path to transformation.

Speaking during an Independence Day parade commemorating Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary at the Government House in Umuahia, Governor Otti attributed several factors to Nigeria’s failure to reach the desired level of development since gaining independence.

Governor Otti highlighted issues such as greed, narrow-mindedness, the unrelenting pursuit of power, and the ongoing plundering of public resources as contributors to the nation’s decline.

While acknowledging that Nigeria’s leaders bear a substantial portion of responsibility for the country’s challenges, Governor Otti also emphasized that the citizenry shares in the collective blame.

He stated, “Many factors have been identified as responsible for Nigeria’s inability to achieve the progress expected of it since gaining independence 63 years ago.”

“My estimation however is that Nigeria has not made much progress in it’s journey of transformation for reasons of greed, and narrow-mindedness.

“The desperation for power, unending pillaging of public resources and the worrisome refusal to see the bigger picture boils down to greed and the ungodly urge to think only of ourselves.

“Corruption and the abuse of resources have combined to cripple several state institutions in the country are manifest products of greed which for me, represents an unhealthy desire to acquire everything for oneself without minding what happens to afterwards and to other people”, Gov Otti noted.

He however maintained that the situation is not completely irredeemable noting that the Independence Anniversary marks “a great day to begin on a new path towards national rebirth”.

“Admitted that a whole lot have fallen out of sync with our dreams and values of nationhood, I do not however think that the situation is completely irredeemable otherwise many of us will not be here today.

“At any rate, we must refuse to be mislead into thinking that change can just happen by merely wishing. A desire for change must match with appropriate commitment,a clear sense of responsibility and an understanding of the quantum of sacrifice required to turn things around.”

Governor Alex Otti emphasized the crucial role of young people in a nation’s progress, noting that when they are isolated, no country can thrive. He expressed concerns over the phenomenon of young Nigerians leaving the country for better opportunities abroad, referred to as the “Japa syndrome,” which has resulted in a loss of talent across various fields.

He warned that if immediate action is not taken, Nigeria’s downward trajectory will continue.

Otti acknowledged Nigeria’s vast potential but stressed that realizing this potential requires collective efforts from all stakeholders.

He urged Nigerians to nurture the seeds of nationhood sown by their forebears, emphasizing selfless commitment to serving both the state and the nation.

Governor Otti also mentioned his administration’s commitment to building a new Abia State that the people can take pride in. He vowed to continue taking the necessary steps to lead the state towards a more promising future.

The event, which included a parade inspection by Governor Alex Otti, was attended by various dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Chief Ikechukwu Emetu, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly Rt. Hon Austin Nmeregini, SSG Prof Kenneth Kalu, Chief of Staff Pastor Caleb Ajagba, service chiefs, and members of the state executive council.
