Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, criticised the recent move by 16 state governors who submitted reports advocating for the establishment of state police to the National Economic Council.
In an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Makinde labeled the submission of memoranda as a futile exercise, emphasizing that the issue of state police should be addressed by the National Assembly rather than the NEC or the National Security Adviser.
While 16 governors have submitted their reports supporting the idea of state police, Makinde, along with 20 other governors, remains unconvinced. He clarified that he did not submit any memoranda on state policing and expressed scepticism about the approach, considering it unlikely to yield the desired results swiftly.
Makinde emphasised that the matter of state police is constitutional and should be handled by the National Assembly before being adopted by state Houses of Assembly.
He stressed that the National Assembly possesses the necessary expertise to address the issue promptly, and thereafter, the state legislatures can pass laws to implement state police at their respective levels.
At the time of Makinde’s comments, 20 other governors had not yet submitted their reports on the matter to enable the NEC to take further action.
