Gisèle Pelicot’s Ex-Husband Jailed For 20 Years In Historic Rape Trial.

Gisèle Pelicot’s ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of drugging and raping her, while also orchestrating the abuse of her by dozens of strangers over nearly a decade. The verdict marks the conclusion of France’s largest-ever rape trial, which has shocked both the nation and the world.

The 72-year-old defendant was convicted of all charges in Avignon, southern France, and wept as he received the maximum sentence. He was tried alongside 50 other men, all of whom were found guilty of at least one charge. However, their prison terms were less severe than the prosecution had demanded.

Ms Pelicot, who chose to waive her right to anonymity, attended the trial daily, often facing her ex-husband of 50 years in court. She appeared composed as the verdicts were delivered, with her children sitting silently by her side.

The three-month trial has been a gruelling ordeal for Ms Pelicot, who described it as a “very difficult experience.” Speaking outside the court after the verdict, she expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she had received, saying, “I never regretted my decision to make this trial public so society could see what was happening.”

On Thursday morning, hundreds of supporters gathered outside the courthouse, chanting Ms Pelicot’s name and singing feminist songs. A large banner reading “Thank you, Gisèle” was displayed prominently, while others voiced their condemnation of the convicted men.

Ms Pelicot’s decision to bring her ordeal into the public eye was unprecedented and has been hailed as a pivotal moment in raising awareness of sexual violence. Addressing the crowd, she expressed hope for a “better future” built on “mutual respect” between men and women.

The trial attracted significant media attention, with hundreds of journalists present for the verdict. Ms Pelicot’s courage and resilience have inspired many, symbolising a turning point in the fight against sexual violence in France.
