FUOYE Governing Council Clears Vice Chancellor Of Harassment Allegations.
The Governing Council of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has formally exonerated the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fasina, of the sexual harassment allegations levelled against him by a senior lecturer, Mrs Folasade Adebayo.
This outcome was contained in an official statement issued on Wednesday by the university’s Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mr Mufutau Ibrahim.
The Council, after a thorough investigation into the matter, declared that there was no evidence of sexual misconduct. It directed Mrs Adebayo to submit a written letter of apology within seven days for what it described as a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Vice Chancellor and the institution.
The allegations, which had stirred significant attention earlier this year, led to the establishment of an investigative committee by the university’s council in February. The committee’s work was supported by the active interest of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), FUOYE chapter.
To ensure transparency, the Vice Chancellor was requested to recuse himself from the council meeting where the investigation findings were deliberated. During the session, the Council members reviewed the controversial audio recordings central to the allegations with the assistance of a translator.
Following comprehensive discussions, the Council unanimously agreed that there was no indication of sexual harassment. The findings were in line with an earlier police investigation, in which Mrs Adebayo herself confirmed that she had not been sexually harassed.
It was also revealed that the recordings were allegedly used in an attempt to blackmail Professor Fasina into confirming Mrs Adebayo as the substantive Director of Works and Services — a role beyond the Vice Chancellor’s remit to appoint directly.
The Council has now issued a formal warning to Mrs Adebayo for bringing the university’s name into disrepute and ordered her to issue a public apology.
In addition, the Council criticised the university management for irregularities, particularly the backdating of Adebayo’s promotion to 2015 in the year 2024, which it described as preferential treatment. The management has been instructed to review this promotion decision.
To ensure transparency and adherence to due process moving forward, the Council also announced that the positions of substantive Director of Physical Planning and Director of Works and Services would be publicly advertised.
The Council’s decisions reaffirm its commitment to upholding integrity, fairness, and good governance within FUOYE.
