Flamingos To Face Ghana In WAFU U-17 Girls’ Cup Final.
Nigeria’s U-17 girls, the Flamingos, will face arch-rivals Ghana in the final of the inaugural WAFU U-17 Girls’ Cup on Sunday. This showdown will take place at the Ghana Centre of Excellence in Prampram, the same venue where the Flamingos secured their spot in the final with a 2-0 victory over Benin Republic on Thursday night.
Sunday promises a double dose of football rivalry between the two nations, as Nigeria’s home-based senior men also face Ghana in the first leg of their African Nations Championship qualifier in Accra.
The Flamingos, who were World Cup quarter-finalists, delivered a strong performance against Benin Republic. Mary Lucky Mkpa broke the deadlock in the 70th minute with a composed penalty, following an earlier missed opportunity by Janet Akekoromowei. Eight minutes later, Peace Effiong capitalised on a goalkeeping error to double Nigeria’s lead. However, Akekoromowei’s late goal was disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper.
Nigeria’s journey to the final has been impressive, with 14 goals scored and only two conceded across three matches. Their confidence will be high as they prepare to face a Ghanaian side that cruised past Cote d’Ivoire with a commanding 5-0 win in their semi-final earlier in the day.
The final promises to be a thrilling contest, with both teams eager to claim the historic title in this inaugural tournament.
