FG Renames University Of Abuja To Yakubu Gowon University.
The Federal Government has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in honour of the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently marked his 90th birthday.
The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement on Monday after a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu. Idris explained that the decision reflects the government’s recognition of Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development.
He stated, “The Federal Executive Council has resolved to rename the University of Abuja in honour of General Yakubu Gowon. This decision will be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal legislative approval.”
General Yakubu Gowon served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1966 to 1975, playing a pivotal role during a challenging period in the nation’s history. The renaming of the university is seen as a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy as an elder statesman.
The proposal is now set to undergo the legislative process, ensuring the formalisation of the name change.
