Federal Government To Commence Work On South-East, South-South Super Highway.
In a significant boost to Nigeria’s infrastructure development, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced that construction on the South-East and South-South super highway will begin next week, marking a major milestone in the Renewed Hope road infrastructure initiative championed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking on Monday, Umahi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering the project within the stipulated time frame, assuring Nigerians that the highway will be constructed to the highest standards and will stand the test of time.
The super highway is part of a broader vision to transform Nigeria’s road network and stimulate economic growth through improved connectivity. The Akwa Ibom section of the highway will be officially flagged off on 14 and 15 April 2025, while the Trans-Sahara Road spur in Ebonyi State is scheduled for launch on Wednesday, 16 April 2025.
“The Federal Ministry of Works under my watch met in Lagos over the progress of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project; a game-changer for inclusive economic growth and progressive national prosperity,” Umahi stated.
He emphasised that the coastal highway and other ongoing projects across the country will significantly boost key sectors such as tourism, trade, agriculture, aquaculture, and maritime services. According to him, the super highway will also serve as a vital evacuation corridor and catalyst for regional integration.
Notably, the new highway will feature modern amenities, including CCTV surveillance for enhanced security, and will embrace eco-friendly principles through sustainable infrastructure and tree planting initiatives.
Umahi thanked Nigerians for their continued support of the government’s infrastructure drive and called for collective commitment to national development. “Under the leadership of Mr President, we are determined to deliver awarded projects within record time. Let’s work together towards a brighter future for Nigerians,” he said.
With construction set to begin, the project is expected to create jobs, improve travel times, and drive long-term economic growth across Nigeria’s southern regions.
