The Federal Government has launched a comprehensive investigation into allegations of bribery and corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
This follows claims that popular crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, did not serve his jail term in a correctional facility after his sentencing earlier this year.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, gave the directive in a statement issued on Wednesday by his media aide, Babatunde Alao. The decision comes after reports surfaced, alleging that Bobrisky, instead of serving his time in prison, spent his sentence in a rented apartment near the correctional centre. The claims were brought to light by social critic Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), through a leaked audio recording in which Bobrisky purportedly admitted to the arrangement.
In response, Minister Tunji-Ojo expressed zero tolerance for misconduct within the NCoS, warning that any form of corruption, indiscipline, or unprofessionalism would be met with severe consequences.
“The Ministry will not tolerate any compromise on its core values of integrity, transparency, and accountability. We will leave no stone unturned in rooting out corruption and ensuring that those found culpable face the full wrath of the law,” the minister’s statement read.
A special investigative team, led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, has been appointed to probe the allegations and submit a detailed report. Tunji-Ojo reassured the public that the investigation would be thorough, transparent, and impartial, with appropriate disciplinary action taken against any personnel found guilty.
