Federal Government Endorses Cold Storage Initiative To Bolster Food Security.

In a determined effort to tackle food shortages and reduce post-harvest losses, the Federal Government has endorsed the Cold Storage Initiative, a transformative project aimed at enhancing food security across Nigeria.

The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, announced the government’s support during a meeting with a delegation comprising representatives from the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF), GENESIS Energy Group, USAID, and KPMG. The meeting, held at the minister’s office in Abuja, focused on forging a strategic partnership to deploy solar-powered cold storage facilities nationwide.

The delegation presented an ambitious plan to establish cold storage facilities in strategic locations, a move expected to minimise farm produce losses and optimise supply chain efficiency. These facilities, powered by renewable energy, aim to revolutionise Nigeria’s food storage landscape by ensuring that fresh produce reaches consumers while significantly reducing waste.

Mr Edun commended the delegation’s efforts and reaffirmed that food security remains a top priority for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He underscored how recent economic reforms, including market-driven fuel pricing and foreign exchange policies, have stabilised the economy and created a favourable environment for investment in key sectors.

“The government is fully committed to supporting initiatives like this that align with our agenda to create jobs, attract foreign investment, and reduce poverty,” the minister stated.

The delegation included notable figures such as Akinwole Omoboriowo, CEO of GENESIS Energy; Mohammed Ibrahim, NADF Executive Secretary; and Dimeji Salaudeen from KPMG. Their collective expertise is expected to drive the success of the initiative, which marks a pivotal step in addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges.

With the Federal Government’s backing, the Cold Storage Initiative is poised to transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector, reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring food availability nationwide. As the country moves towards a sustainable future, this project offers a beacon of hope for achieving a hunger-free Nigeria while boosting the economy and improving livelihoods.

This development underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration to secure the nation’s food supply and build a resilient agricultural sector.
