The Federal Government has unveiled a significant addition to Nigeria’s national power grid, injecting an impressive 625 megawatts (MW) of electricity capacity.

This boost brings the grid’s wheeling capacity up to 4800MW. The announcement was made by Bolaji Tunji, the Special Adviser, Strategic Communications to the Minister of Power, in a statement released in Abuja.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, highlighted the inauguration of two crucial power infrastructure projects during ceremonies held in Ajah, Lagos, and Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. These include a 63 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA), 132/33 Kilo Volt (KV) mobile station and a 60MWA, 132/33KV Power Transformer.

Adelabu emphasised the significance of these projects in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the power sector. He noted that the mobile substation inauguration is aimed at addressing transmission capacity constraints across the nation, providing relief of over 1300mv.

These projects are part of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), a collaborative effort involving the Federal Government of Nigeria, the German Government, and Siemens Energy. Adelabu commended the partnership for facilitating the production and installation of the substations.

Additionally, a remote inauguration of a 60MVA power transformer at Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, was announced. Adelabu highlighted that these initiatives collectively increase transmission wheeling capacity by 123 MW, promising enhanced electricity supply for all Nigerians.

However, Adelabu urged Nigerians to protect these critical installations from vandalism and sabotage, emphasising the importance of collective responsibility. He called on stakeholders in the power sector to work diligently to meet project delivery timelines.

Managing Director of FGN Power Company, Mr. Kenny Anuwe, underscored the importance of initiatives like the PPI in Nigeria’s journey towards energy sufficiency and economic prosperity.

He reiterated the commitment of FGN Power Company to driving progress and improving electricity access across the nation.

Tunji highlighted FGN Power’s role as a special purpose vehicle established by the Presidency to implement the PPI, with Siemens serving as the technical partner. This initiative reflects the government’s dedication to transforming Nigeria’s power sector and unlocking its full economic potential.
